What is involved in getting a crown? Chula Vista, San Diego

Porcelain Caps or Crowns

Caps or Crowns come in several types.  Porcelain is the most popular because it is most attractive and looks natural, unlike metal crowns. They are very strong and will last a long time. You can have a natural looking, beautiful smile with long-lasting porcelain crowns.  They match your teeth in color, shape and size.

What is involved in getting a crown?

It typically takes two appointments to have a crown done. During your first appointment, several extremely accurate molds, or impressions, will be made which will be used in creating your custom crown. A mold will also be utilized in the creation of a temporary crown. This will remain on the tooth for a couple of weeks while the dental laboratory makes the new crown.

Porcelain Fixed Bridges

A porcelain fixed bridge is permanent and is a great way to replace your missing teeth.

There are a few different kinds of bridges. Confer with your dentist to determine your very best options. The most popular option is the "traditional bridge" which is normally made of porcelain fused to metal. Porcelain fixed bridges look like natural teeth, so they are very popular. With this type of bridge, two crowns will cover the abutment or anchoring teeth.  These will be attached to the pontics or artificial teeth.  This fills the gap that is made when teeth are missing.

A dental bridge is quite strong and will last a long time.  Of course, eventually it may need to be replaced or repaired due to normal wear and tear.

What is the process for getting a fixed bridge?

At least two visits are necessary when obtaining a bridge. While the area is numb, a portion of enamel is removed from the two anchoring teeth in preparation for the crown. The next step is the sending of a very accurate mold or impression of your teeth to a dental lab.  There, your new bridge will be created. You may get a temporary bridge to use until your next appointment.

During the second visit, your permanent bridge will be checked, adjusted and cemented, ensuring a correct fit. Sometimes the dentist may choose to cement the bridge on a temporary basis so that the teeth and tissue have time to adjust to the new bridge. Permanent cementing of the bridge will take place at a later time.

After treatment, care instructions will be provided to you. You can extend the life of your new permanent bridge by brushing and flossing properly and visiting your dentist regularly.

Full Dentures and Partial Dentures

Dentures are appliances that can be removed and put in place of lost teeth and the tissue that is around it. They are crafted to look quite similar to your natural teeth and may even improve your smile.

Two types of dentures are available -- complete dentures and partial dentures. When no teeth remain, complete dentures are utilized, but partial dentures are used if some natural teeth are present. When you have a partial denture, it will fill in the blank left by your missing teeth, and it will protect your remaining teeth by preventing them from shifting.

There are two kinds of dentures: 1. Conventional. 2. Immediate.  Conventional dentures are created after the teeth have been pulled and the gums have healed.  It may take four to six weeks to receive your conventional dentures. The patient will have no teeth during this period.

On the other hand, as soon as your teeth are removed, you will have "immediate dentures".  These are dentures that were made up for you in advance so that you will not have to go toothless until your permanent dentures are made. It will be necessary to make adjustments once the tissues have healed and shrunk.

Dentures are very strong objects that will be around many years, but might have to be made over again, fixed, or altered because of normal use.

Reasons for dentures:

• Complete Denture - If you lose all of the teeth in your arch.
• Partial Denture - Within an arch there is the loss of several teeth.
• Improving smile and tissues of the face.
• Improvement in the processes of chewing, speaking and digestion.

What happens when you get dentures?

A number of appointments will be necessary over a period of several weeks in order to obtain dentures. Extremely accurate impressions, or molds, and measurements are take which are utilized in the creation of your custom denture. To get the right shape, color and fit, a few "try-in" appointments may be required. At your last appointment, the completed denture will be meticulously placed and adjusted to make sure that the fit is natural and comfortable.

Common side effects include greater flow of saliva, a measure of soreness, and some difficulty with chewing and speaking.  These symptoms are usually temporary.  When your tissues and muscles are used to the new dentures, these side effects will subside.

Dental Sealants Chula Vista San Diego

Dental Sealants

A dental sealant is a very thin coating of plastic. It is applied to the chewing surfaces of the molars and premolars.  It is also used to fill pits, fissures, and grooves in the teeth. These deep grooves is where the great majority of dental decay starts. When teeth have these conditions, they are difficult to clean and may experience decay. A sealant seals deep grooves, providing protection and creating a surface that is smooth and easy to clean.

Be sure your dentist checks your sealants for chipping and wear at each visit.  With proper care, your sealant will last years.

Why get a sealant?

• Teenagers and children - It is a good idea during the cavity prone years(6-16).  This is as soon as the first permanent molars appear.
• Adults - Teeth with no signs of decay but that have deep grooves or depressions.
• Baby teeth - Sometimes performed if teeth are deeply grooved or have depressions and the child is prone to getting cavities.

What is involved in the application of sealants?

Your dental hygienist or your dentist can apply sealants quickly and easily.  It just takes about two minutes per tooth.

Once the teeth that need to be sealed are completely clean, they will be surrounded with cotton to keep them dry. The surface of the enamel receives an application of a special material that will help the sealant bond to the teeth. Next the teeth are rinsed and dried. The deep grooves and depressions in the surface of the enamel are covered with sealant material. Considering the kind of sealant that is applied, the substance will either get hard by itself or by using a special curing light.

The life of the new sealants will be assisted by a balanced diet, proper care at home, and regular visits to the dentist.

A filling that is the same color as the tooth is used to fix the tooth that is rotted, cracked, fractured or has another defect. A composite filling is used to repair or replace decayed areas of the tooth.

There are a number of ways to fill a tooth, and there are disadvantages and advantages inherent in each method. Discuss your best tooth restoration options with your dentist. Currently, the most widely used fillings are composite or silver amalgam. Composite fillings are suitable for use in teeth that are most visible, since these fillings are tooth colored and can be matched to the color of existing teeth.

Periodontal Treatment CHula Vista, San Diego

Periodontal Treatment

Depending upon how severe your periodontal disease is, treatment will vary. After performing an evaluation for periodontal disease, your dentist and hygienist will make a recommendation regarding the correct treatment.

When the space or pocket (sulcus) between gums and tooth becomes filled with tartar, bacteria and plaque, it causes irritation and periodontal disease progresses. Gum damage can occur and bone supporting the teeth can be undermined if these irritants are allowed to remain in the pocket space.

When gingivitis is discovered in its early stages, before damage has occurred, one or two regular cleanings will be suggested. Instructions will also be provided regarding how to improve your daily oral hygiene habits, and you will be encouraged to have regular dental cleanings.

If the disease is more advanced, scaling and planing will be recommended. This is a special periodontal cleaning method. Normally one quadrant of the mouth is numbed and treated at a time. Scaling is the process used to remove toxins, plaque and tartar from below the gum line.  Planing is the process used to smooth rough spots on the root surface. This procedure promotes healing of gum tissue and shrinkage of pockets. To help control infection and promote healing, your provider may suggest medications, special medicated mouth rinses and an electric toothbrush.

If, after scaling and root planing, the pockets do not heal, the pocket depths may need to be surgically reduced; this will result in making it an easier matter to clean the teeth. It is possible that your dentist will tell you to make an appointment with a Periodontist, a dental professional who specializes in caring for gums and supporting bone.
